Thanksgiving & Praise

Updated: Feb 12, 2024

Psalm 9:1-2

[1] "I will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart; I will tell of all Your wonders. [2] I will be glad and exult in You; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High."

By constantly thanking God and giving Him the recognition He so rightly deserves, we remind ourselves that it is because of His blessing that we succeed and prosper.

By constantly thanking and praising God, we humble ourselves, acknowledging that it is because of what He has done and not by our works, deeds, or merit.

Thanksgiving & praise generates gratitude and facilitates the building of wisdom which is the fear of God. When overcoming obstacles, God is there, helping us. By always constantly acknowledging God, we in turn recognize His goodness and favor. This creates gratitude for Him. This gratitude should be accompanied by thanksgiving and praise. By constantly thanking God and giving Him the recognition He so rightly deserves we remind ourselves that it is because of His blessing that we succeed and prosper.

Deuteronomy 8:17-18 [17] “Otherwise, you may say in your heart, ‘My power and the strength of my hand made me this wealth.’ [18] But you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, that He may confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day,”

We should always be thanking God, if for nothing else than Christ and what He has accomplished for us. It is because of Christ that we have the reconciled relationship with God. It is because of Christ that we are forgiven our sins, healed of our diseases, and made clean, holy, and whole.

Psalm 9:1-2 [1] "I will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart; I will tell of all Your wonders. [2] I will be glad and exult in You; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High."

Thanksgiving and praise are the proper way to come before God.

Psalm 100:4-5 [4] "Enter His gates with thanksgiving, His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him; bless His name. [5] For the Lord is good; His lovingkindness is everlasting, and His faithfulness to all generations."

Psalm 118:19-21 [19] "Open to me the gates of righteousness; I shall enter through them, I shall give thanks to the Lord. [20] This is the gate of the Lord; the righteous will enter through it. [21] I shall give thanks to Thee, for Thou have answered me; and Thou dost become my salvation."

Psalm 33:1 "Sing for joy in the Lord, O you righteous ones; praise is becoming to the upright."

We should never be complaining about anything.

Lamentations 3:39-41 [39] “Why should any living mortal, or man, offer complaint in view of his sins? [40] Let us examine and probe our ways, and let us return to the Lord. [41] We lift up our heart and hands toward God in heaven.”

There was a man who had no shoes and was complaining about it. Then he spotted a man without feet and was thankful for the ability to walk. Think of everything you have that you can thank God for. Are you healthy. Thank God! Do you have clothes to wear? Do you have a bed? Thank God! Do you have food to eat? Thank God! Do you have children? Thank God! Are you married? Thank God! Thank God for all of the good things that you have. Praise Him for His excellence and His lovingkindness

I would encourage you to stop reading and write out a list of everything you have to be thankful for. Post it on something you will see all the time. Keep God’s blessings in your life ever on your mind. Thank Him continuously.

Psalm 118:1-5 [1] "Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His lovingkindness is everlasting. [2] Oh let Israel say, "His lovingkindness is everlasting." [3] Oh let the house of Aaron say, "His lovingkindness is everlasting. [4] Oh let those who fear the Lord say, "His lovingkindness is everlasting." [5] From my distress I called upon the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me in a large place.”

Praising God and declaring that we put our trust in Him destroys fear.

Psalm 56:9-13 [9] “Then my enemies will turn back in the day when I call; this I know, that God is for me. [10] In God, whose word I praise, in the Lord, whose word I praise, [11] in God I have put my trust, I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me? [12] Thy vows are upon me, O God; I will render thank offerings to Thee. [13] For Thou hast delivered my soul from death. Indeed my feet from stumbling, so that I may walk before God in the light of the living.”

We praise God and His word. We put our trust in Him and declare that we are unafraid. Making God our trust gives us confidence. What does David say after declaring that he is unafraid? He goes on to say that He will thank God for His deliverance and protection. So thanksgiving and praising God destroys fear and creates confidence in God’s ability and willingness to help us with whatever we need.
