Proverbs 18:21 "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit."
In order to encourage ourselves with the word of God, we should speak His promises to us out loud. We should boldly declare God’s love, His blessing, and His provision for us with praise and thanksgiving.
Proverbs 3:5 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding."
Thanks to the redemption that we have in Christ, we can boldly proclaim, "I trust in the Lord with all my heart, and do not lean on my own understanding."
I am going to go ahead and include a large selection of great verses that we can confess which are specifically tailored to our own individual self. Notice, we are not changing the word of God, but proclaiming, confessing, and affirming it as that which we know and perform.
'I know that I trust in the Lord with all my heart, and I do not lean on my own understanding.'
Psalm 37:34 "Wait for the Lord, and keep His way, and He will exalt you to inherit the land; when the wicked are cut off you will see it."
I wait for the Lord, and keep His way, and He exalts me to inherit the land; when the wicked are cut off I see it.
Deuteronomy 6:5 "And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might."
I love the Lord my God with all my heart and with all my soul and with all my might, I also love my neighbor as myself.
King David makes it really easy in the next couple examples, we don't even have to re-word them.
Psalm 16:5-9 [5] "The Lord is the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You dost support my lot. [6] The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; indeed, my heritage is beautiful to me. [7] I will bless the Lord who has counseled me; indeed, my mind instructs me in the night. [8] I have set the Lord continually before me; because He is at my right hand I will not be shaken. [9] Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; my flesh also will dwell securely."
We need to continuously encourage ourselves with the promises of God. There are so many passages in God's word where He tells us the importance of the words of our mouths.
Proverbs 10:19-20
[19] "When there are many words, transgression is unavoidable, but he who restrains his lips is wise. [20] The tongue of the righteous is as choice silver, the heart of the wicked is worth little."
Listen to what the verses above say. When we open our mouths in unbridled speaking, we are sure to sin as transgression is unavoidable. Wisdom is restraining our lips. Also the tongue of the righteous is as choice silver. Why? Selection. The righteous knows that the words of our mouth should be few and productive. Here are several verses from Proverbs on the importance of our speech.
Proverbs 22:17-18
[17] "Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise, and apply your mind to my knowledge; [18] for it will be pleasant if you keep them within you, that they may be ready on your lips."
Proverbs 10:31
[31] "The mouth of the righteous flows with wisdom, but the perverted tongue will be cut out."
Proverbs 12:6
[6] "The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood, but the mouth of the upright will deliver them."
Proverbs 12:14
[14] "A man will be satisfied with good by the fruit of his words, and the deeds of a man's hands will return to him."
Proverbs 12:18
[18] "There is one who speaks rashly like the thrusts of a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing."
Proverbs 13:2
[2] "From the fruit of a man's mouth he enjoys good, but the desire of the treacherous is violence."
Proverbs 13:3
[3] "The one who guards his mouth preserves his life; the one who opens wide his lips comes to ruin."
Proverbs 14:3 [3] "In the mouth of the foolish is a rod for his back, but the lips of the wise will preserve them."
How are we to use the blessings that God has blessed us with in Christ? We are to imitate Him and speak them. The word of God is what instructs us as to what is right and what is wrong.
