Deuteronomy 11:19 [19] "And you shall teach them to your sons, talking of them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road and when you lie down and when you rise up."
Our thoughts should come from meditating on the word of God and paying attention to what He has to say.
God, in His infinite wisdom, knew we would be faced with distractions. So, in order to help us keep His law on the forefront of our minds and focus, He came up with several solutions.
God instructs us to always be speaking of His commandments and His word. When we are at home sitting down, or when we are walking along, perhaps walking the dog, we are to be speaking of His commandments. We could include this in modern times to include; while driving to work, on the subway or bus, while riding a bike, to always be focusing on His commandments and His promises to us.
God tells us, His people, to keep the words of His mouth ever present on our minds.
God is telling us to literally wear His commandments so as to always be thinking of Him.
God goes on to tell us to wear articles of clothing, tassels, to remind us of His commandments.
Numbers 15:38-41 [38] "Speak to the sons of Israel, and tell them that they shall make for themselves tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and that they shall put on the tassel of each corner a cord of blue. [39] And it shall be a tassel for you to look at and remember all the commandments of the Lord, so as to do them and not follow after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you played the harlot, [40] in order that you may remember to do all My commandments, and be holy to your God. [41] I am the Lord your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt to
be your God; I am the Lord your God."
In Numbers 15:40, God tells us why we are to wear tassels on our clothing, “in order that you may remember to do all My commandments, and be holy to your God.”
These tassels are commonly known as Tzitzits, you can find them on Amazon in a four pack for about $13, depending on the day it might be a little more or a little less.
Another way God reminds us of Him and His law is by having us put His law on our gates and our houses.
Deuteronomy 6:9 "You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."
As soon as we get home from work, what is there to remind us on the front door? The law of God is there to greet us as we come home. God greatly wants us to always be meditating on Him, His law, and the words of His mouth.
You can go on Amazon and buy a brass plaque with the commandments of God engraved on it for ten dollars. It’s called a Mezuzah. Then all you have to do is screw it into your door frame. It's easy to do, and for around $10, its a bargain. Every time you get home, there is the Law of God to greet you, and, its in obedience to His commandment to do so.
Deuteronomy 6:6 "These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart."
If we do this one thing that God tells us to do, it takes care of almost everything else.
What we think about continually determines what we focus on. What we focus on determines how we act. So, if we are constantly thinking about, focusing on, and speaking of the commandments of God, then we are not going to stray away from Him.
We are considerably less likely to sin against God or anger Him if we are constantly speaking of His commandments. This is why He Himself tells us to speak of His commandments unceasingly.
Let's take it a step further, instead of just His commandments, how about all of the words of His mouth? You can recite the ten commandments all day long which is great but what about Proverbs, or Psalms, or the instructions of Christ. Now the Proverbs of Solomon in the first couple of verses are applying to the proverbs themselves, but it is also a great explanation of the benefits of God's law.
Proverbs 1:2-5 [2] “to know wisdom and instruction, to discern the sayings of understanding, [3] to receive instruction in wise behavior, righteousness, justice and equity; [4] to give prudence to the naive, to the youth knowledge and discretion, [5] a wise man will hear and increase in learning, and a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel,"
Our minds need to be focused on keeping God’s commandments. As a result, we can confidently say, “I am blessed! All that I put forth my hand to do is blessed because I love God and keep His commandments.”
We know that no evil will befall us nor any plague come near our tents because we keep His commandments. We do not look for or worry about sickness because God does not let it approach us. Stay focused on Him!
